What is the difference between revision, review and editing?

• Revision – four eyes see more than two

  • ISO 17100 requires every translation to be double-checked by a second translator. The second linguist checks the text against the source text and for typos, style, logic, redundancy, or omissions.
  • ► Note: Revision should not be confused with post-editing. In post-editing, a machine-translated text is edited by a human translator. Depending on the quality of the initial translation, parts of a sentence may be retained, rearranged where appropriate, or replaced with original (human) translations.

• Review – so nothing slips through the cracks

  • During the review, the translation is checked for logic, clarity, and accuracy. Requests for changes and suggestions for improvement are documented in the form of feedback and comments, which are sent back to the translator for implementation.
  • The review step can be performed internally by our team or carried out by the client. This gives you as the client the opportunity to continuously adapt translations to your specific needs and verify their technical accuracy. Your feedback allows us to tailor future translations more precisely to your needs.

• Editing – professional text finishing

  • Editing can be viewed as a standalone process independent of the translation. You’re probably familiar with situations where you need an extra pair of eyes, for example:
    • to edit a text you have written,
    • to check the texts on your website for linguistic accuracy,
    • to revise or update blog posts,
    • to polish video transcriptions,
    • or to take a critical look at textsbefore they go to print.
  • During editing, a finished text is revised in terms of linguistics, style, and form to improve readability and achieve the desired text format. Terminology and spelling are checked for consistency.
